Hands-on with the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold

We got a chance to try out the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and here’s what stood out. The new design is a big leap from the first Pixel Fold, offering a more modern look, improved ergonomics, and snappy performance. The upgraded displays and AI features are also impressive, but we need more time to fully evaluate it. So far, though, it’s off to a strong start.

Design

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has received a major design overhaul compared to last year. It’s narrower and nearly square when unfolded, making it easier to handle when folded. The back features a new two-row camera layout, with a matte glass finish protected by Gorilla Glass Victus 2. The frame is now made of recycled aviation-grade aluminum with a satin finish, and the hinge has been improved for durability. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is also slimmer than its predecessor, measuring just 5.1mm when unfolded and 10.5mm when folded, though it’s slightly heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Display

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold features a 6.3-inch outer OLED display with a 1080 by 2424 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The inner display is an 8-inch “Super Actua” screen with a resolution of 2076 by 2152 and a dynamic refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz. Both displays support HDR10+ and have a peak brightness of up to 2,700 nits. Google claims the inner display is the largest of any Android phone in the U.S.

Performance

Powered by Google’s Tensor G4 chipset, the Pixel 9 Pro Fold offers better performance and efficiency than its predecessor. It has 16GB of RAM and comes in 256GB and 512GB storage options. The Tensor G4 also introduces satellite SOS for emergencies and supports tri-band Wi-Fi 7, 5G, ultra-wideband, and Bluetooth 5.3.

Battery and Charging

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a 4,650mAh battery, slightly smaller than the previous model. While Google claims it can last 24 hours, we’ll need to test it further. It supports wired and wireless charging, though details on charging speeds are yet to be confirmed.

Camera

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold’s camera setup is less exciting than the rest of the Pixel 9 lineup. It retains the same 48MP primary camera and 10.8MP telephoto lens with 5x zoom, but the ultrawide camera has been downgraded to 10.5MP. Both selfie cameras are upgraded to 10MP with a wider field of view. While the Fold can shoot 4K video, it lacks 8K recording due to thermal limitations.

Software and Updates

The Pixel 9 Pro Fold ships with Android 14 instead of the latest Android 15, which is a first for Google. However, it’s expected to receive Android 15 soon after launch. The phone features new AI experiences powered by Google’s Gemini Nano AI model and comes with a complimentary Google One subscription and access to the Gemini Advanced AI model for one year. Google promises seven years of updates for the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, though it remains to be seen how the hardware will hold up over time.
